Here’s what happened in December!

Community Ambassador Day

On Friday, December 10, local McDonald’s® employees volunteered their time at the Urban League of Philadelphia’s food drive. The volunteers arranged and distributed donated food to families in need. In addition, McDonald’s Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc. donated $1,000 to the organization. The Urban League of Philadelphia is devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream by providing direct services, research, and policy advocacy to help individuals and communities reach their fullest potential.

2010-2011 RMHC® Scholarship Applications Now Available!

RMHC of the Philadelphia Region, Inc. grants approximately $80,000 each year to college-bound high school seniors from the Greater Philadelphia area based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and community involvement.  The local RMHC Scholarship is comprised of four individual programs: the RMHC Scholars® program for all high school seniors; the RMHC/Future Achievers® program for African American high school seniors; the RMHC/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources® (HACER®) program for Latino high school seniors; and the RMHC/Asian Students Increasing Achievement® (ASIA®) program for Asian high school seniors.  Fifty total scholarships are awarded.

Applicants will be asked to submit a high school transcript, a letter of recommendation and a personal statement detailing their background and community involvement.  The scholarship deadline is January 28, 2011.  To download an application or apply online, visit www.RMHC.org.  For additional information, please call the Education Hotline at 215-790-4320.

Dental Care for Qualified Kids Ages 3-8 at No Cost to Families

The St. Christopher's Foundation for Children Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® - a two-chair clinic on wheels that provides diagnostic, preventative and restorative dental care to qualified children ages 3 to 8 at no cost to their families - is accepting appointments at (215) 427-4645.

Care includes examinations, cleanings, fluoride and sealant treatments, x-rays and fillings.  Care Mobile staff will also provide children with oral hygiene instruction. Complicated treatment will be referred. Children qualify for the program if their families are unable to find a Medicaid provider or cannot afford to pay for dental services.

Here’s what happened in November

.

McHappy Day® 

On November 10, McDonald's® celebrated McHappy Day, which kicked-off the annual "Give A Hand®" fundraiser in participating U.S. restaurants.  Customers could purchase a paper Hand between November 10-20 to support Ronald.McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) - the company's "Charity of Choice" for more than 35 years.  All fundraiser proceeds benefited RMHC and supported children and families in need in local communities across the United States and around the world. 

Customers could also give to RMHC when they purchased a Happy Meal®. As part of the company's ongoing commitment to the Charity, participating McDonald's® donated a portion of the proceeds from each Happy Meal® and Mighty Kids Meal® sold every day to RMHC.

McHappy Day® also featured its fundraiser online through the shareable "Family Time. Happy Time" campaign.  The campaign encouraged families to pledge minutes of "happy time" together via McDonald's.Facebook page.  McDonald's. donated one penny to RMHC for each minute pledged, with a goal of reaching 1 million minutes and $10,000 to donate towards RMHC programs.

The McRib® Returned!

From November 2 through December 5, the legendary McRib® sandwich was available at participating McDonald’s restaurants.  In support of the McRib’s triumphant return, McDonald’s Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region hosted a “Legends of McRib” celebration on November 5, at the University City McDonald’s in Philadelphia. The celebration included customers sampling the McRib.and participating in McRib.trivia to receive fun McRib-themed prizes. Nick McIlwain from WMMR’s Preston & Steve morning show emceed the event.

McRib.fans were also invited to tap into their creative passion with the launch of “The Legends of McRib” website (www.McDonalds.com/McRib). “The Legends of McRib” is a collection of McRib.stories and tall tales submitted by fans who want to share their love for the sandwich with the world. The author of the winning submission will win a trip to Germany, the only place where the McRib.is served year-round. Customers had the opportunity to record and submit their stories for “The Legends of McRib” contest on site during the celebration.

Here’s what happened in October!

McDonald's® Bilingual College Workshop Visited to Philadelphia

On Saturday, October 2, McDonald's® and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund held a Bilingual College Workshop at Edison High School to provide parents and students with essential information on how to navigate the college application process.  The free Steps for Success CollegeTM Workshop included seminars on managing the application process, applying for financial aid and researching scholarships, such as the RMHC®/HACER® Scholarship Program.  The day also included a college fair featuring area community colleges and four-year universities.  Free breakfast and lunch was served, along with the chance to win raffle prizes!

Hispanic Choice Awards

On Thursday, October 14, McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc. were proud to sponsor the 2010 Hispanic Choice Awards.  The Hispanic Choice Awards honored and celebrated Pennsylvania, New Jersey & Delaware's favorite Hispanic people, organizations and businesses as chosen by its community in a variety of categories. The event promoted professional, personal and cultural achievements for Latinos living and working in our region.

Ronald McDonald® Tour de Fitness

McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc. pedaled through the fourth annual Ronald.McDonald® Tour de Fitness, which featured Ronald McDonald biking to twelve elementary schools throughout the region.  At each school Ronald McDonald used music, magic and games to teach students that being active and making healthy choices can be easy, fun and safe.  McDonald's® also donated $1,000 to each school's physical education program.

After visits in Pemberton, N.J., and Philadelphia in September, Ronald continued his Tour de Fitness in Wilmington, Del., and Easton, Pa., in October.

During the four-city Tour series, Ronald met more than 4,800 students in an effort to generate awareness for bike safety and leading balanced, active lifestyles.

Ronald McDonald® Tour de Fitness

McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc., geared up for the fourth annual Ronald McDonald® Tour de Fitness, which featured Ronald® McDonald biking to elementary schools in Pemberton Township, N.J., and Philadelphia where he met with more than 2,500 students in an effort to generate greater awareness for bike safety and leading balanced, active lifestyles.

At each school Ronald McDonald and used music, magic and games to teach students that being active and making healthy choices can be easy, fun and safe. 

McDonald's® also donated $1,000 to each school's physical education program.  The four-city Tour will continue in October with the final two visits in Red Clay, Del., and Easton, Pa.

McDonald's® Celebrated Puerto Rican Culture

McDonald's® Restaurants in the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc. helped celebrate Latino heritage at the 48th Regional Puerto Rican Day Parade on September 26th.  This annual parade from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Independence Hall brings together community organizations, schools, corporate sponsors and many others to celebrate this rich culture.

McDonald's® Encouraged Family Fitness

McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc., helped make family fitness a walk in the park on August 29th as part of the Please Touch Museum's® Stroller in the Park 5K walk in Fairmount Park.

The family-friendly event supported the Museum's Get Up and GrowTM healthy lifestyles initiatives.

SmileCenterCommunity Health Care, Inc. (CHCI) received a $24,900 RMHC grant during a check presentation in August. The grant helped fund the Ronald McDonald Smile Center, which provides dental screening and treatment for children in Bridgeton, N.J.

StMichaelsSt. Michael's School received a $13,600 RMHC grant during a check presentation in August.  The grant helped fund the "Read, Write, Listen, Speak" early literacy program for preschoolers.

McDonald's® Gave Philadelphia Residents a Lift with New McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies 

McDonald's® introduced Philadelphia customers to an entirely new, refreshing experience with the introduction of McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies, the latest addition to the McCafé menu.  McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies bring a little lift into your day with a unique blend of real fruit, real juice, and low-fat yogurt, blended with ice.  McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies provide a great-tasting, slow-sipping, beverage experience that customers can enjoy all day, every day.

McDonald's® Celebrated Hispanic Culture in July

McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Inc., helped celebrate Hispanic culture at the 30th annual Hispanic Fiesta on July 10th and 11th at Penn's Landing.

This free, two-day event featured music, food, crafts and entertainment from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico.

The Variety Children's Charity received a $25,000 RMHC grant during a check presentation in July.  The grant helped fund medical equipment for the Direct Care for Kids program which provides wheelchairs, braces, walkers, hearing aids, apnea monitors and other equipment for children with disablilities.

Medford

Medford Township, N.J., received a $20,000 RMHC grant during a check presentation in July. The grant helped fund safety improvements and wheelchair accessible play areas for a new playground.

2009-2010 Ronald.McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) Scholarship Winners Were Announced!

RMHC® of the Philadelphia Region, Inc. grants approximately $70,000 each year to college-bound high school seniors from the Greater Philadelphia area based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and community involvement.  The local RMHC Scholarship is comprised of 3 individual programs: the RMHC Scholars® program; the RMHC/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources® (HACER®) program for Latino high school seniors; and the RMHC/Future Achievers® program for African American high school seniors. Fifteen (15) total scholarships are awarded for each program, two (2) at $5,000 and thirteen (13) at $1,000.

McDonald's® Added New McCafé Frappé Blended Ice Drinks to Menu

McDonald's® added an indulgent new treat to its menu, allowing customers in the Greater Philadelphia Region to taste the new McCafé Frappé blended ice beverages.

McCafé Frappés are thick and creamy, blended-ice drinks available in either mocha or caramel, with a hint of coffee, and served with whipped cream and either chocolate or caramel drizzle, giving customers an any-time-of-day blended treat on the McCafé menu.

McDonald's Community Ambassador Days!

As part of McDonald's® Community Ambassador Program, local McDonald's® Owner/Operators and Crew volunteered at two locations this month: the Allentown YMCA & YWCA, where volunteers planted a garden and landscaped, and the Atlantic County Women's Center, where volunteers helped organize a storage area. In addition to volunteering, McDonald's Restaurants of the Greater Philadephia Region, Inc. donated $1,000 to each organization.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) Partnered with CBS3 and CW Philly to Host "Caring Calls for Kids" Phone Bank

McDonald's® Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region hosted a "Caring Calls for Kids" Phone Bank on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the CBS3 Studios.

McDonald's.Honors Local Hammonton Restaurant Manager with Prestigious National Award

Congratulations to Glenda Aviles, one of the nation's top McDonald's® restaurant managers. Glenda received the Ray Kroc Award, an annual performance-based award that recognizes the top performing McDonald's restaurant managers in the country. Named after McDonald's corporate founder Ray Kroc, the award was established eleven years ago in 1999 to honor hardworking restaurant managers - those who make Ray Kroc's vision of excellence come to life in restaurants and for customers each day.

A select 141 managers were chosen this year to receive the Ray Kroc Award, an honor that comes with a cash award, a Ray Kroc award trophy and pin and a trip to Chicago for an awards gala on March 16 hosted by McDonald's USA President, Jan Fields.

Philadelphia Region Boasts Two 2010 McDonald's® High School Basketball All Americans

Last month, the McDonald's® All American High School Basketball Selection Committee announced the 33rd All American High School Basketball Boys Team and the ninth All American High School Basketball Girls Team.

Congratulations to Haley Peters of Peddie High School in Hightstown, NJ, and Maggie Lucas of Germantown Academy in Washington, Pa., who were both named to the Girls Team! Click here to read more.

McDonald's hosted a mini-basketball skills camp to send 2010 McD's All American High School Basketball Girls Team Finalist Haley Peters off to the big games! Peters helped score a $1,000 donation for the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey at a charity shoot-out.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC® ) of the Philadelphia Region, Inc. Recognized 2009 Grant Recipients

Ronald® McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region, Inc. has awarded more than $290,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations throughout 2009. These grants provided support to programs aimed at improving the health and well-being of children throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region. A luncheon was held this month to recognize the nonprofit organizations to which the charity granted funding in 2009.

The Mac Snack WrapTM Arrived!

Beginning January 8th, McDonald’s® offered its newest menu item: the Mac Snack Wrap! The Mac Snack Wrap™ revolutionizes how customers experience the classic flavor of the Big Mac® along with McDonald’s everyday value and convenience. The wrap combines all the ingredients of the Big Mac wrapped up in a flour tortilla for increased delicious moveability. To celebrate the launch of this new item, McDonald’s Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia region hosted various “Give a Wrap, Get a Wrap” Coat and Blanket Drives throughout the month in which customers who donated a new coat or blanket received a free Mac Snack Wrap™
